Is your hydration hose too long and flapping around during runs? Many runners don’t realize that the hose of a hydration bladder can be trimmed for a better, more comfortable fit. It’s a simple adjustment that can improve your hydration system and overall running experience. Here’s how to do it.
Why Trim the Hose?
A hose that’s too long can bounce, twist, or get caught in your gear. This not only affects comfort but also makes drinking on the go less efficient. Trimming your hose to the right length helps keep it secure and within easy reach, especially when paired with a hydration vest.
Can You Trim Any Hose?
Most hydration bladder systems, including those from Nathan, are designed to be adjustable. As long as the hose is removable from the bladder and bite valve, you can trim it. Be sure to measure carefully before making any cuts.
How to Trim a Hydration Hose
Follow these simple steps:
- Place the bladder in the hydration pack of vest
- Secure the bladder to the vest
- Pull the hose through the left or right hole at the top of the pack
- Bring the hose to the front strap
- Secure the hose to the clip
- Bring the hose to your mouth to confirm the best length
- Use a pen to mark the best length of the hose
- Remove entire bite valve
- Use scissors to cut the hose to the desired length
- Use firm grip to reattach the hose
- Make sure the valve is fully secured before using
Take your time, you can always trim a little more if needed, but you can’t reattach a piece once it’s cut off.
